Gift in Will
A gift in your Will can help CHAI continue supporting people in Edinburgh facing poverty, homelessness and financial hardship for generations to come.
Gift in Will
If you are thinking about the future, leaving a Gift in your Will to CHAI (Community Help & Advice Initiative) is a meaningful way to support people living in or facing poverty, homelessness and financial hardship in Edinburgh for years to come.
Your family and loved ones should always come first, but even a small gift can make a lasting difference to the people we support.
What can my gift support?
A Gift in your Will can help CHAI continue to provide free, confidential and non-judgemental advice on welfare rights, energy, housing, debt and employability to people who need it most.
If you prefer, you can also direct your gift towards a specific area of our work that is important to you.
How to leave a Gift in your Will
We recommend speaking to a solicitor when making or updating your will.
I don’t have a Will
It is never too early to make a will. Having a will helps ensure that the people and causes you care about are looked after in the future and that your wishes are carried out.
I already have a Will
If you already have a Will and would like to leave a gift to CHAI, your solicitor may be able to update your existing Will by adding a codicil or preparing a new Will.
Types of Gifts
There are different ways you can leave a gift to CHAI:
A share of your estate: Known as a residuary gift, this allows you to leave a percentage of your estate after other gifts and costs have been paid.
A fixed sum of money: Known as a pecuniary gift, this allows you to leave a specific amount of money. You may wish to ask your solicitor about making your gift inflation-linked so that it keeps its value over time.
Other gifts: You can also leave gifts such as property, land, shares, investments or personal possessions including jewellery, books, antiques or artwork.
Tax Benefits
CHAI is a registered charity, so gifts left to us are generally exempt from inheritance tax.
A charitable gift may reduce the taxable value of your estate and, in some circumstances, may reduce the rate of inheritance tax payable on the remainder of your estate if 10% or more of your net estate is left to charity.
We recommend seeking independent legal or financial advice if you would like more information about inheritance tax.
